The Minister for Health and Social Development has urged the National Health Insurance to take on a larger role in preventative health measures, particularly by eliminating copay costs for breast cancer screenings.
Hon Vincent O. Wheatley made the remarks while speaking with the Public Health Communications Specialist about the upcoming BVI Wellness Fest, set for Saturday, November 7, 2026. Health screenings will feature prominently at the event.
Wheatley emphasised the importance of routine medical visits rather than seeking care only when illness strikes. "Let a person only go to the doctor when they feel sick. We're saying no, no, no. Check your health regularly," he said.
The Minister highlighted breast cancer screening as a priority area where NHI should expand its financial support. He questioned why the insurance scheme cannot absorb the full copay burden for those pursuing the examination, noting that expenses frequently deter people from obtaining necessary screenings.
"I am going to insist that they participate more actively in these kinds of preventative measures, because sometimes what we find is that the cost of these things becomes a barrier to persons seeking the health and screenings that they need," Wheatley said. He also expressed interest in seeing more individuals sponsor others to undergo cancer screening.
