Virgin Gorda Basketball Club apologises after East team left stranded

Poor coordination over boat capacity and headcount confirmation forced players to abandon the weekend tournament and catch an early ferry home.

The Virgin Gorda Basketball Club and Summer Jam Committee have apologised to the East basketball team after a travel coordination failure left competitors without lodging and forced an unexpected early departure from the weekend tournament.

East players who took part in Saturday, October 24 matches were caught off guard when accommodation fell through. They had no choice but to board an early Sunday morning ferry back to Tortola, organisers acknowledged in a statement.

The root cause lay in two separate breakdowns: limits on how many people the ferry could carry, combined with organisers' failure to lock down exact player numbers and travel plans beforehand. Historically, boat arrangements for the weekend had prioritised officials, with teams only offered transport as an unpaid add-on. That casual approach backfired when no one confirmed whether East would actually need the seats.

"Members of the East team were left unaccommodated and forced to take an uncomfortable, early morning ferry back to Tortola," the statement said.

Regular ferries run between Virgin Gorda and Tortola each morning from Spanish Town to either Road Town or Beef Island, serving as the main lifeline for inter-island league travel.

The Virgin Gorda Basketball Club accepted full blame for the communication breakdown and said such confusion should never happen. Officials noted that while ferries for officials and courtesy team transport have been standard practice, leaving expectations unspoken was a mistake. The club said it prides itself on hospitality and values East's commitment to the Virgin Gorda Basketball League.

Moving forward, the Summer Jam Committee promised to overhaul how it handles communication and boat logistics to stop the problem recurring. Organisers thanked East for staying patient and gracious throughout the ordeal, and said they want to bring the team back to Virgin Gorda under far better conditions next time.

The Summer Jam tournament continues to draw squads and supporters from across the Territory. The incident has underscored both the league's expanding reach and the real logistical hurdles that come with running sport across multiple islands.
