The Department of Culture brought its months-long cultural education programme to a close on Wednesday with a Virgin Gorda session dedicated to the Virgin Islands' traditional fungi music.
Over twenty attendees gathered for the workshop, led by Bernadine Walters Louis. The event represented the final chapter in a recent series organised jointly by the Department of Culture, the H. Lavity Stoutt Community College's Virgin Gorda Campus, and the Jennie Wheatley Virgin Islands Studies Institute.
Deputy Director of Culture Anne Lennard commended the initiative in remarks, highlighting how such efforts bring communities together and create learning opportunities for younger people while safeguarding local heritage. She recognised the contributions of facilitators Kayron Todman and Arona Fahie Forbes, members of the Razor Blades Fungi Band, and Janice Nibbs Blyden.
The Department acknowledged backing from the Department of Youth Affairs and Sports, BVI Finance, and others who worked to support the workshops.
These sessions form part of Culture and Tourism Month, which continues through November under the banner "Our BVI, Our Culture, Our Story". The Department is inviting residents to engage with a full slate of activities, including a Cultural Food Fair scheduled for Friday, 20 November at Noel Lloyd/Positive Action Park.
