St. Vincent and the Grenadines' netball squad has secured a berth at the 2027 World Cup in Sydney, Australia, after placing second at the Americas regional qualifiers held in Barbados. The qualification marks the island nation's return to the global tournament after a quarter-century absence.

The timing held special significance: the team's success coincided with the nation's 47th independence anniversary, prompting government and sports officials to celebrate the achievement as an independence milestone.

The tournament demanded resilience from the Vincy Jewels. The squad opened strongly with a win over the United States but faced a severe test when Trinidad and Tobago defeated them by 30 points. The team recovered through the remaining matches and clinched their spot with a thrilling overtime win in their final game.

Goal shooter Marian Frederick emerged as the tournament's standout performer, converting 95.25 percent of her shots and recording a flawless shooting performance in at least one match. The roster combined players based locally with overseas athletes of Vincentian descent, including Justine Sansson, Summer Artsman, co-captain Kamisha Antwine, Cristiana Christopher, Kyla Miller, Josianne Antwine, Zani Vincent, Kana Charles, Chalissa Davis, Jamira Coombs, and Shaniah Pompy.

Head Coach Natasha Baptiste Samuel and Assistant Coach Akil Matthews oversaw the squad's development, with Team Manager Jovanni Roberts handling logistics. The preparation included practice matches against the Vincy Warriors, the men's national team, which the Jewels defeated three times in four outings. Delrice Duncan provided strategic input while Chester Morgan managed the squad's physical conditioning.

At a homecoming ceremony, Minister of Sports, Culture, Youth, and the Creative Industries Kashaka Cupid praised the team's character and pledged government backing for the four-year campaign to the World Cup. The Minister also unveiled plans to create structured, paid employment for national athletes and urged businesses to support women's sports initiatives.

Team Manager Roberts credited spiritual practices and daily prayer as anchors during intense competition. He identified priority needs for the squad moving forward: access to advanced medical imaging like MRI and X-ray services for injury assessment, consistent gym facilities, and transport arrangements after evening training sessions.

Coordinator of Sports and Physical Activities Roxel John disclosed that officials have submitted a 45-page development strategy to government leadership. The proposal calls for a new sports body equipped with a modern biomechanics laboratory capable of providing diagnostic testing and performance analysis for all national competitors.

Assistant Coach Akil Matthews reflected on the achievement, stating: "We went to Barbados with a dream. We return home with a World Cup qualification. And now, St. Vincent and the Grenadines, we are going to Sydney."
