A 32-year-old man died and a woman went missing after a red Nissan Note veered off the Southern Main Road in Cunupia, Trinidad and Tobago, and plunged into the Cunupia River early Sunday morning.
Joel Farfan of Mt. Pleasant, Arima, was driving the vehicle, registration PEL 8295, when it crashed through a roadside barrier near Mohan's Gas Station at about 7 a.m. on October 4. The car ended up completely submerged except for its hood.
According to police, an eyewitness told officers that Farfan had just refuelled at the gas station and was traveling north when he lost control of the vehicle. It veered left, struck the railing, and went into the stream.
When officers arrived, they found a male passenger, 33-year-old King Harrison, on a concrete platform several feet from the car, being helped to the bank by people at the scene. Harrison was taken to the Eric Williams Medical Sciences Complex in Mt Hope with minor injuries.
Farfan was also transported to the hospital, where he was declared dead. A woman who was in the vehicle has not been located. Police said they are continuing efforts to identify her and determine her whereabouts.
