A 36-year-old man lost his life in a shooting incident near Apostolic Way, off Carmichael Road in New Providence on Saturday, October 17, 2026, police said. The killing followed a confrontation centred on an unpaid debt.

The incident unfolded shortly after 4 p.m. when the victim was preparing to leave Apostolic Way in a black Honda. A white van blocked his vehicle's path, and the van's driver engaged him in a heated exchange about money owed. During the altercation, the victim produced a sharp object.

A third person at the scene then drew a firearm and fired multiple shots at the victim. Emergency Medical Services arrived and assessed him, but medical staff pronounced him dead at the location. The shooter escaped in a grey vehicle heading south on Apostolic Way.

Police from the Mobile Division took a 27-year-old man, the white van's driver, into custody for questioning. Authorities clarified that detaining him does not mean he is suspected of pulling the trigger.

Investigators are still working to piece together what happened, identify who fired the weapon, and establish the full chain of events. Police are asking anyone who saw the confrontation or has information to call emergency services at 911 or 919, the Criminal Investigation Department at 502-9991, or Crime Stoppers anonymously at 328-TIPS (8477).
