Anegada residents have endured nearly two decades of waiting for road repairs that finally commenced in September 2026, though progress has been so sluggish that former legislator Shereen D. Flax-Charles fears the work may not be substantially finished before the island's Lobster Festival opens on November 27.
Flax-Charles raised her concerns during an appearance on NDP Radio on October 28. She noted that "Contracts were signed years ago," yet materials only arrived mid-September and have since cluttered the roadway, making passage difficult for vehicles and causing tyre damage. She also mentioned that a tourist was thrown from a scooter due to the road's condition.
In September, District Nine Representative Vincent O. Wheatley outlined the rehabilitation plan: approximately 4,800 linear feet of roadway will receive concrete paving across four phases. The initial phase targets roughly 1,200 linear feet along the route toward Cow Wreck.
Flax-Charles attributed the slow progress to inadequate worker support. "Most, if not all, of the workers are willing and able," she said, "but they're not receiving what they need to execute their job."
Despite her frustration, Flax-Charles expressed cautious optimism. "We're hoping that something will happen before Lobster Fest," she said, emphasizing that basic road upkeep on Anegada should have been prioritized far earlier.
