Former At-Large Representative Shereen D. Flax-Charles has pushed back against what she describes as uneven development across the British Virgin Islands, saying that infrastructure work must roll out simultaneously rather than island by island.
Speaking on ZBVI 780 AM's Talking Points programme on Monday, September 21, 2026, Flax-Charles said Virgin Gorda residents have not yet felt the impact of a reported $100 million in government spending. "We have not seen a penny of the $100 million being spent on Virgin Gorda yet," she said.
The former representative listed persistent problems on Virgin Gorda: water supply failures, electricity outages and deteriorating roads. Residents of Jost van Dyke and Anegada have raised the same issues with her, she noted.
Flax-Charles acknowledged that Tortola has seen substantial development work. She suggested that Virgin Gorda is roughly where Tortola stood six months earlier, and warned that piecemeal progress leaves communities behind. "Things need to be done simultaneously throughout the territory," she said, arguing that coordinated planning ensures all residents get the services they need.
Part of the $100 million loan has been earmarked for infrastructure in Virgin Gorda and Anegada, according to reporting by Virgin Islands News Online. The Lee Road project in Virgin Gorda is set to resume, and road work in Anegada is planned. These two projects together are worth more than $2 million.
