Tortola's road upgrade programme is prioritising strength and longevity over quick completion, Premier and Minister of Finance Dr. Natalio Wheatley has said.
Wheatley highlighted visible progress on several key corridors, including routes serving Beef Island, Road Town, Little Dix Hill, Joe's Hill and Cane Garden Bay. He described the experience of drivers on these sections as notably improved. "It's a smooth drive that you have into town when you're going over the hill," he said.
Work is also advancing in West End, where Wheatley acknowledged the temporary inconvenience to residents but expressed confidence in the outcome. "It was painful for a little while, but persons are seeing the light at the end of the tunnel," he said.
The Premier explained that building roads correctly demands patience. "We're doing the work properly. And when you do the work properly, it's going to take a longer time, but it's going to last longer," he said.
Wheatley traced earlier road damage to a pattern under previous governments: laying asphalt shortly before elections without sufficient groundwork. His administration's strategy differs by installing proper drainage systems and preparing an adequate sub-base before surfacing, measures intended to extend the lifespan of the roads.
The VIP Government's success, Wheatley said, rests on having a clear plan, obtaining the necessary funds and carrying out the construction. He called on the public to remain patient as work proceeds.
