Two companies have submitted bids for the first phase of work at Terrance B Lettsome International Airport, Communications and Works Minister Kye Rymer said on September 30.
The project calls for a 787-foot extension at the western end of the runway on Beef Island. Rymer, speaking on Virgin Islands Voice, confirmed that an evaluation team would now review the two submissions. He did not identify the bidders or disclose proposal values, saying his team would assess them before sharing details with the public.
The BVI Airports Authority opened tenders in May, seeking firms or joint ventures to handle design, construction, completion, testing, commissioning and correction of defects for the western runway extension.
Rymer's announcement followed Premier Dr Natalio Wheatley's remarks on government infrastructure priorities and competing demands on public funds, including airport needs.
The broader expansion project has involved years of talks between the government and the United Kingdom regarding financing and borrowing capacity. In February, Premier Wheatley reported that the UK was examining the project's business case. He noted that the proposed borrowing would exceed the territory's debt ratios and that approval from the UK was needed before moving to the next procurement phase. Wheatley also indicated the government planned to release business case information after deciding which details should be withheld to protect the tender process.
