Classrooms in the St. Thomas-St. John District opened their doors today after shutting down for three days because of widespread power failures, the Virgin Islands Department of Education said Sunday night.

Full instructional time has resumed following the blackouts that disrupted the district last week. An Open House and Parental Conference that had been set for today will take place on another date to guarantee students get a complete day of learning.

The department acknowledged the toll the outages took on households. Families dealt with "emotional stress" and lost access to "everyday necessities such as food, water and medicine," the VIDE said in a statement.

Education officials thanked parents, guardians, teachers and residents for their patience through the crisis. The department expressed hope that the return to school would restore "stability, connection, and a sense of normalcy" for students, staff and educators after the disruption.
