A St. Lucian farmer and chef have been convicted of drug trafficking in St. Vincent and the Grenadines following the seizure of more than 20 kilograms of cannabis resin.

Kerry Edwards, 31, and McGavin Wyllie, 31, both from Saint Lucia, entered guilty pleas on October 13 at the Serious Offences Court. The men admitted to three charges: possession of a controlled drug with intent to supply, drug trafficking, and importation of a controlled drug.

Police said the men had 20,974 grammes of cannabis resin in their possession on October 9 in Arnos Vale, with plans to distribute it. They faced a second set of charges relating to the same quantity of cannabis and cannabis resin, alleged to have been held for trafficking and importation purposes.

The court handed down financial penalties totalling $27,020 in Eastern Caribbean currency. Each man was fined $4,600 for the possession charge; failure to pay results in one year imprisonment. The trafficking conviction carried a $18,020 fine per person, with a three-year prison term as default. For importation, each received a $4,400 fine, with one year imprisonment as the alternative.
