Guyana police have recovered the remains of six-year-old Orlando Jaikarran from a waterway in Bath Settlement, West Coast Berbice, ending a six-day search that began when he vanished from his home.
The discovery took place around 1:00 a.m. on October 20 at the Sea Dam Canal at Water Street, Block D. Officers found the body in an advanced state of decomposition and transported it to Bailey's Funeral Home for autopsy, which will establish the cause of death.
Orlando went missing on the morning of October 14 when his brothers, aged seven and ten, discovered he was no longer in the family residence. His father then reported him missing to Fort Wellington Police Station.
The boy's father is currently held by police and has given investigators information about where the child was located. Two additional individuals are also in custody as the investigation continues. Search teams from Regional Division Five conducted operations across Bath and surrounding backlands on October 16. Officers also recovered footwear during searches on Sunday, which they believed belonged to the father.
When questioned by her son's mother, Dhankumarie Gowkarran, the father denied harming his child. He stated that he loved his children and provided for them. Gowkarran characterised her son as a dedicated sugarcane harvester who prioritised his children's education.
The children's parents separated approximately two years ago. Police say the precise circumstances of Orlando's death remain under investigation, with further information to be released as the case develops.
