A man who worked as a delivery clerk has been formally charged with murder in the death of a 72-year-old woman in Clare Valley, St. Vincent and the Grenadines.

Keswert Slater appeared in the Serious Offences Court on October 5 before Chief Magistrate Colin John. Prosecutors allege that on September 25, he caused Jean Slater's death through a beating with an unknown object on May 5, acting with malice aforethought through an unlawful act.

Jean Slater was the aunt of Nadia Slater, who serves as acting Director of the Agency for Public Information. Keswert Slater is Nadia's cousin.

The defendant did not enter a plea on the murder indictment and was refused bail. He remains in custody pending trial.

Two additional charges stem from the same May 5 incident. Slater was charged with trespassing at Nadia Slater's home with intent to commit grievous bodily harm. He was also charged with assault on Nadia Slater, whom he struck with his hands and a 25-pound gas cylinder, causing injuries to her face and chest.

Chief Magistrate John set the next court date for November 17, having been told that Jean Slater's funeral is scheduled for November 15.
