The BVI Health Services Authority has rejected claims that oxygen shortages contributed to a patient's death at the Nurse Iris O'Neal Clinic on Virgin Gorda.
In a statement released Friday, October 16, the Authority said oxygen was supplied at the facility when the patient arrived with breathing difficulties and subsequently died. "The suggestion that the patient's passing occurred because oxygen was unavailable at the facility is not supported by the facts," the BVIHSA said.
The Authority did not reveal the date of the incident or offer specifics about how the patient was treated or the cause of death. It offered sympathy to the family and acknowledged concerns voiced by residents of Virgin Gorda.
The clinic has operated under temporary arrangements since September after air quality problems were identified inside the building. Emergency services available round the clock have been moved to St. Mary's Anglican Hall, while North Sound Clinic now handles vaccinations and wound care.
The BVIHSA stated it would continue prioritising patient care, upholding community trust and ensuring transparent communication. The Authority urged islanders to obtain information through proper channels and to honour the family's need for privacy.
