The FBI's San Juan Field Office has received new authority to issue citations for federal misdemeanor violations, with particular emphasis on cracking down on reckless drone operations and airspace intrusions across Puerto Rico and the US Virgin Islands.
The U.S. Attorney's Office for the District of Puerto Rico granted the expanded enforcement powers, enabling federal agents to fine operators who fly unmanned aerial systems unsafely or enter restricted zones near airports, military installations and other sensitive federal sites.
Special Agent in Charge Carlos R. Goris said the FBI takes airspace safety seriously in protected areas. "Unauthorized drone operations in these zones pose real risks to public safety and to ongoing federal and military operations," Goris stated. "Violating these restrictions can result in serious consequences, and those who choose to disregard them will be held accountable."
The citation authority applies to several federal statutes covering airspace and security violations. These include unsafe drone flights in runway exclusion zones, photographing defense installations by aircraft, operating unmanned systems on restricted federal property, and breaching national defense airspace or temporary flight restrictions.
Beyond drone enforcement, the FBI said agents can also issue citations for other federal misdemeanors within their jurisdiction. These offences include petty theft under $1,000, possession of stolen property on federal grounds, simple assault, obstructing a federal officer, and misuse of government insignia.
