The Government of Dominica is moving forward with plans to relocate families from high-risk areas to safer communities, Housing Minister Melissa Poponne Skerrit announced.
The relocation programme will resettle residents from Campbell, Petite Soufrière, San Sauveur, and Good Hope to Castle Bruce and Warner, where infrastructure is already in place to support construction. Engineer surveys and site plans have been completed, and five local contractors are preparing to bid for the work.
Construction was expected to begin in September 2025. The projects will be accompanied by water storage upgrades in Castle Bruce as part of DOWASCO's water strategy, and future housing developments in Warner.
Minister Skerrit emphasised that the government prioritises local employment on all housing sites. "We want local contractors, tradesmen, and laborers from the community. That way, money circulates within the community," she said.
The Minister described the social benefits alongside the physical construction, noting that local food vendors and workers reinvesting earnings in neighbourhood businesses would drive community revitalization. She encouraged residents in affected areas to prepare for the changes, saying their villages would soon experience increased job opportunities and economic activity.
The government has secured funds for the projects, which represent what officials describe as a major investment in Dominican citizens.
