The British Virgin Islands will have just one athlete at the Dakar 2026 Summer Youth Olympic Games in Senegal: 16-year-old sprinter Taraji George, who will run the women's 100m hurdles.
George's race is scheduled for November 8 at 10:05 a.m. BVI time, which corresponds to 2:05 p.m. in Dakar. The Games themselves span from October 31 to November 13.
The BVI Olympic Committee made the announcement on Saturday. George said she views her sole-representative status as an opportunity. "As the only athlete representing the British Virgin Islands, I have the opportunity to showcase my talent and compete alongside some of the best young athletes in the world," she said.
Beyond the track, George sees value in the broader experience. The chance to forge international friendships and gain exposure to other cultures matters to her, she explained. "Most importantly, I want to make myself, my mom and my coaches proud," George added. She also noted that competing on this stage would motivate her to pursue even greater achievements in sport.
George will be accompanied by Chef de Mission Ericca Frederick and Team Official Tameeka George. The delegation departs the BVI on November 5 and is expected back on November 15.
BVIOC President Ephraim Penn arrived in Dakar on October 30, in time for the opening ceremony.
