Elijah Walters has claimed a silver medal at the 2026 World Sailing Inclusion Championships held in Portimรฃo, Portugal from October 4 to 10, marking a watershed moment for his nation's sailing programme.
The achievement carries particular significance: Walters is the first sailor representing St. Kitts and Nevis to compete at the championships. He raced in the ILCA 6, a single-handed dinghy, under the coaching of Nickhail Rogers. Before the main event, both participated in World Sailing's Inclusive Development Programme from October 1 to 3.
The championships drew over 200 athletes from more than 40 countries competing across eight disciplines. The event brings together competitors with physical, visual, and intellectual impairments in a high-performance international setting.
Walters has trained at the Nevis Aquatic and Sailing Centre (NASC) for roughly 15 years, building his skills within an organisation dedicated to broadening access to the sport. The St. Kitts and Nevis Sailing Association (SKNSA) had flagged his participation beforehand as a turning point for inclusive sport locally.
The SKNSA credited the medal to a combination of Walters' long-term commitment and targeted preparation with Rogers. The Association noted that the result demonstrates what becomes possible when athletes gain opportunities, proper coaching, and pathways to international competition.
For years, the SKNSA has sought to expand opportunities for sailors with disabilities beyond domestic racing. Walters' performance at the world championships now forms a foundation for developing a lasting inclusive sailing programme in the Federation.
The SKNSA acknowledged World Sailing's Emerging Nations Grant, the Nevis Island Administration's Department of Sports, the Nevis Aquatic and Sailing Centre, and individual contributors and club members who provided financial backing. Rogers received separate recognition for his guidance throughout Walters' career.
