Salt Island residents are being invited to apply for five positions on a Standing Committee tasked with overseeing how Crown Lands are distributed across the sister island.

The Ministry of Environment, Natural Resources, and Climate Change opened applications for the committee, which operates under the Crown Lands Management Act, 2024. Members will work alongside the Crown Lands Advisory Board and the responsible ministry to guarantee that land allocation happens fairly and with full transparency.

The committee's duties include setting standards for what counts as ancestral land, taking into account historical occupation, cultural importance, and sustained use. Members will also examine historical archives, land records, and maps to document patterns of traditional land occupation, and help the government design a comprehensive development strategy for Salt Island working with community partners.

Candidates must hold at least an associate's degree and show they are trustworthy, possess high integrity, have strong communication and research abilities, and can reach sound decisions promptly. Eligibility requires being a Virgin Islander, holding a certificate of belonging for 20 years or longer, having ancestral ties to Salt Island through family, or meeting other constitutional criteria. All applicants must live in the British Virgin Islands.

Those interested should send a cover letter explaining their connection to Salt Island, a curriculum vitae, and any supporting documents to Dr. Ronald Berkeley, Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Environment, Natural Resources and Climate Change, at [email protected]. Applications close on Friday, 3 December 2026. The government will invite only shortlisted candidates for interviews.
