The British Virgin Islands government has secured a $100 million loan to rehabilitate and upgrade road infrastructure across all islands in the Territory, Premier and Minister of Finance Natalio Wheatley announced on October 2.
Wheatley made the announcement during a broadcast of the Virgin Islands Voice, the government's public information programme. The investment aims to strengthen road quality across the Territory while building resilience through concurrent utility improvements alongside road works.
The project represents a shift in approach from previous years. Rather than resurfacing 38 miles of road, the government is now implementing comprehensive works across nine miles spanning every major island. This includes resurfacing, drainage improvements, road widening, retaining walls, subbase repairs and rehabilitation of damaged roads.
Minister of Communications and Works Kye Rymer outlined specific projects underway and planned. Work is happening on Anegada, a contract has been approved for Lee Road on Virgin Gorda, and designs exist for a road on Jost Van Dyke. Tortola is seeing extensive road works. Water infrastructure upgrades are being done alongside the road improvements on all islands.
Rymer noted the visible benefit of recent work, saying roads from Beef Island to Road Town are now smooth.
The government said works will be implemented in phases, with project locations, timelines and traffic disruption notices to be shared with the public. The Ministry of Communications and Works will provide updates through official channels regarding schedules, road closures and temporary traffic arrangements. Residents are urged to exercise caution around active construction sites and follow traffic-management instructions.
