The British Virgin Islands has postponed the closing date for construction bids on its planned Immigration Detention Centre from October 5 to October 16, 2026, according to the Virgin Islands Recovery and Development Agency.
The 11-day extension allows firms selected to bid more time to prepare and file their proposals while the procurement process moves forward.
Trojan Design and Development Ltd secured a US$370,000 contract in June 2025 to handle design and construction management work on the project. The company was chosen through a Quality and Cost Based Selection procurement method.
The Department of Immigration has outlined plans for a facility that balances security with respect for detainees' welfare. Officials have committed to ensuring those held will be treated with dignity, have their essential requirements provided for, and be housed in conditions that meet global benchmarks for humane detention.
Pending completion of the new centre, the Immigration Department currently keeps detainees at Hotel Castle Maria in McNamara.
