The House of Assembly has put out a call for professional drivers to transport former legislators to parliamentary sittings, ceremonies and other public events, with particular focus on those managing mobility or health constraints.
The initiative stems from recognition that retired elected representatives should be able to participate in important occasions without transportation barriers. Drivers hired under the contract will do more than drive: they will help passengers into and out of vehicles, manage wheelchairs and walkers, and provide support suited to each person's individual needs.
The House issued a Request for Proposals on October 14 for a two-year contract starting in January 2027. The House will supply the vehicle; the contractor will provide the driving staff. Proposals are due by November 13.
The House of Assembly noted that the scheme acknowledges the role former legislators played in building the territory's democratic institutions. The body recently gained independence to manage its own operations, including services for current and former members, rather than depending on central government for all administrative support.
