The 284 Excellence Film Festival is removing the price tag from professional film training in the British Virgin Islands, making every masterclass and workshop available free of charge to anyone interested in filmmaking, acting or production.

Held from October 29 to November 1 under the theme "Uniting Creative Voices, Celebrating Caribbean Stories," the festival combines expert-led sessions, panel discussions and specialised training to help local creatives build skills and connect with industry professionals.

Natalie Hodge, BVI Film Commissioner and Festival Director, framed the initiative as a response to talent already present in the islands. She said the festival aims to "ensure that our local creatives have access to the knowledge, resources and industry connections needed to advance their careers," and added: "Our goal is to help bridge the gap between creative potential and real opportunities within the industry."

Friday programming

On October 30 at H. Lavity Stoutt Community College, two sessions will run back-to-back. From 9:30 a.m. to 10:45 a.m., a panel called "Made From Where You Are: Small Island, Big Screen" will be moderated by Nekita Turnbull, with Teresa Celeste, Ty Walker and CJ Faison discussing how filmmakers from small-island communities can craft authentic stories and reach global audiences. The second session, "Film Unfiltered: The Greenlight Forum" from 11:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m., will bring participants face-to-face with industry producers to discuss funding, distribution and production challenges.

Saturday workshops

Three free workshops take place on October 31, also at the college. "Empowering Independent Producers: Fund | Distribute | Profit," run by Sakura Entertainment from 8:30 a.m. to 9:00 a.m., covers financing and monetising film projects. "Lift Off: Drone Basics," led by Tabari Sturdivant from 9:00 a.m. to 10:00 a.m., introduces drone filmmaking fundamentals. "Acting for Screen," taught by Claudia Knight of Creative Arts BVI from 11:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m., focuses on performance for camera work.

Organisers welcome students, working creatives and anyone curious about filmmaking, and recommend arriving early to secure seating. Full details are available at 284excellencefilmfestival.com or [email protected].
