Virgin Islands Premier Dr Natalio D. Wheatley has mourned the passing of The Mighty Sparrow, the internationally celebrated calypsonian who died on Sunday, September 27, 2026, at the age of 91.
Born Slinger Francisco, The Mighty Sparrow visited the Virgin Islands on multiple occasions throughout his career. His most recent performance came in November 2019, when he took the stage in a wheelchair. He was among the featured performers on the H. Lavity Stoutt Performing Arts Series during the 2010, 2011 season.
In his statement, Premier Wheatley characterised The Mighty Sparrow as far more than a performer. "He was a cultural giant whose music became the soundtrack of Caribbean life for generations," the Premier said. "Through his unmatched talent, sharp wit, and commanding stage presence, he united people across islands, borders, and backgrounds."
The Premier highlighted how The Mighty Sparrow's catalogue, featuring songs such as Jean and Dinah, The Lizard, Obeah Wedding, Lying Excuses, and Drunk and Disorderly, had endured as classics. His compositions examined Caribbean history, social conditions, racial dynamics, and political matters through a blend of humour and storytelling.
"The Virgin Islands was fortunate to welcome him to our shores," Premier Wheatley said, offering condolences to the calypsonian's family and to the people of Grenada and Trinidad and Tobago.
Deputy Speaker Dr Karl Dawson, who previously led H. Lavity Stoutt Community College, reflected on hosting The Mighty Sparrow during the 2010, 2011 series. "That night, as only he could, Sparrow thrilled a full house with songs ranging from among his humorous, witty, social-issues-challenging, inspiring and his then recently embraced gospel selections," Dr Dawson recalled.
The calypsonian's family disclosed that before his death, The Mighty Sparrow had committed his life to Jesus Christ and received baptism in the Seventh-day Adventist faith.
