The Virgin Islands will join ShakeOut, an international earthquake simulation exercise, on October 15. The drill aims to build public awareness and readiness for seismic events across participating nations and territories.
The Department of Disaster Management will lead coordination with emergency response agencies and public sector partners to evaluate alert systems, cross-island communication, and contingency procedures during the exercise.
Director of Disaster Management Jasen Penn said the drill offers "schools, workplaces, families and organisations flexibility to practise earthquake safety in a way that works for them." He added that "earthquakes can happen at any time and without warning, so it's very important that persons do practise and feel confident in their plans."
On the day, residents will hear activation of the National Early Warning Multi-hazard Alert System. Some agencies may conduct evacuation drills as part of their response protocols. Members of the public should drop and take cover under a table or desk, or crouch near an interior wall with hands protecting the head and neck, for 60 seconds. Those wishing to extend the exercise can simulate movement to tsunami assembly points, assess structural damage, or activate emergency contact systems.
People interested in joining can register at https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/shakeout2026. After the drill, participants are encouraged to review their performance and refine their plans.
ShakeOut originated in Southern California in 2008 as an educational tool for earthquake preparedness. The Virgin Islands has taken part annually since 2018. The exercise now spans more than 40 countries and territories worldwide, including the US, Puerto Rico, Canada, New Zealand, Mexico and Greece.
