Virgin Gorda's waste disposal site has introduced a redesigned access route and expanded dumping area intended to make operations safer for drivers and workers.
The upgraded haul road slopes more gradually than its predecessor, lowering the chance that loaded trucks will lose traction on the descent. Alongside it sits a spacious, level platform where operators can safely deposit materials, manoeuvre their vehicles and leave the site.
Brian Davis, who heads the Department of Waste Management, emphasised that safety underpins the project. "The new haul road gives loaded trucks a gentler, more controlled way down to the dumping zone, and the flat platform gives drivers room to tip and turn around safely," he said.
Operators using the facility must follow specific protocols. When driving down, vehicles should engage low gear, slow down at curves and refrain from passing. Before tipping, trucks must sit on level ground with parking brakes applied, and dump beds must be fully raised before the vehicle moves.
The expanded zone accepts construction waste, concrete, soil, fill material and plant matter. Scrap metal, rubber tyres, batteries, used oil, household refuse, solvents, toxic substances and clinical waste cannot be disposed of there; these must go to other parts of the site.
The Department has created a short film with aerial views demonstrating how to enter the site and unload safely. Opening hours are Monday through Friday, 6:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.; Saturday, 6:00 a.m. to noon; and Sunday, 6:00 a.m. to 10:00 a.m.
