The Elections System of the Virgin Islands (ESVI) is using National Election Hero Day on Saturday to recognize the poll workers, volunteers, and administrators who run the territory's elections.
Supervisor of Elections Caroline F. Fawkes described the observance as "an opportunity to thank the individuals who devote countless hours to serving the public and safeguarding our democratic process." She stressed that their work guarantees all eligible voters can participate.
The celebration coincides with the launch of early voting for the general election. On Friday, the first day of voting, 1,145 ballots were cast across the islands: 618 from St. Croix, 519 from St. Thomas, and eight from St. John.
Fawkes expressed satisfaction with the opening results, saying she was "pleased with the positive start of voter participation, which reflects the electorate's commitment to the democratic process."
Early voting continues through October 31. Polling locations on St. Thomas and St. Croix operate from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. daily at ESVI offices, while St. John voters can cast ballots from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.
The three voting sites are located at Sunny Isle Shopping Center Unit 26 on St. Croix; Lockhart Gardens upstairs from Banco Popular on St. Thomas; and Market Place Suite II, 3rd Floor on St. John.
Today marks the final deadline to request an absentee ballot for mailing off island, allowing sufficient time for postal delivery. Applications can be submitted at vivote.gov/voters/absenteeballot. Voters needing assistance can contact the ESVI at (340) 773-1021 for St. Croix or (340) 774-3107 for St. Thomas.
