A 53-year-old criminal defence lawyer and former police officer in Trinidad and Tobago has been fatally shot outside a gymnasium, concluding a pattern of violence that began when he survived an earlier attack at his residence.
Taradath Singh died near Power House Gym adjacent to Caroni Savannah Road and ASJA Avenue at approximately 6:25 p.m. on Tuesday, October 27. An assailant wearing a mask and blue overalls fired twice into his chest. Singh ran toward the ASJA compound but collapsed before reaching safety. He was pronounced dead at the scene. Investigators collected 13 spent 9mm cartridges from the location; his licensed firearm was recovered from his parked car.
The fatal encounter followed a shooting incident outside Singh's Penn Trace home in Cunupia on September 28. That night, a figure in blue coveralls and a cap emerged from vegetation across from the residence and opened fire around 7:35 p.m. Singh's vehicle sustained damage, but he escaped on foot as the gunman fled.
Following the first attack, Singh recorded a voice message expressing his conviction that someone had paid for his murder. "And somebody was obviously paid to take my life," he said in the recording. He continued: "This is just an appeal to whoever that person or those persons are not to take my life, please. Because I want, I want to see my children and grandchildren as well."
Singh also appealed directly to those responsible, saying: "It's simply a plea from me to whoever it is to just not take my life before, you know, it's time. I ask kindly."
Police have not yet determined the circumstances or motive for either attack. Officers have increased patrols in the area while continuing their investigation.
