Authorities in Saint Lucia have charged a man with murder stemming from the 2019 disappearance of an 83-year-old resident whose fate has remained a mystery for nearly seven years.

Kiril Didier faced the charge on Thursday, November 5, one day after taking part in an identification parade. Officers had detained him during a targeted operation three days earlier, on Tuesday, November 3.

Cletus "Banana Split" Hippolyte vanished from his Gros Islet residence in September 2019. To date, neither his location nor his body has been found.

The Royal Saint Lucia Police Force announced that its Gangs, Narcotics and Firearms Unit had recently resumed work on the case after uncovering fresh investigative leads. The force did not specify what those leads entailed or which evidence underpinned the decision to charge Didier.

Didier is scheduled to face a court bail hearing. Police are urging anyone holding relevant information to report to the nearest station.
