Askari Michel appeared in court Thursday on charges stemming from a domestic violence incident that also involved harm to animals and an assault on a police officer.
Magistrate Judge Christopher M. Timmons, sitting in Courtroom MG-3 at the Superior Court's Barbel Plaza South division, found probable cause for four offences following the advice-of-rights hearing: disturbance of the peace by threats, aggravated assault and battery, aggravated assault and battery upon a police officer, and poisoning of animals. A charge of disobeying a lawful order did not meet the probable cause standard and was dismissed.
The incidents that led to Michel's arrest by Virgin Islands Police Department Officer C. Vanterpool occurred on Wednesday, October 7, 2026.
Judge Timmons set bail at $1,000, with Michel required to deposit 10 percent in cash, or $100, to secure release. The court found Michel unable to afford counsel and appointed the Office of the Territorial Public Defender, with attorney Lisa Godfrey taking his case. Assistant Attorney General Brenda Scales prosecuted.
Michel must stay at least 250 feet from the alleged domestic violence victim, keep his employment, and report to the Office of Probation every Tuesday from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. He surrendered his passport and Real ID and cannot possess firearms, ammunition or dangerous weapons.
In an uncommon order for a criminal proceeding, the magistrate directed Michel to continue his GED studies through the Charlotte Amalie High School program.
Formal arraignment is scheduled for Friday, October 23, 2026, at 10 a.m. before Magistrate Judge Julie Smith Todman in the same courtroom.
