A St. Croix resident has been indicted on 12 federal charges in connection with the theft of more than $73,000 in funds from U.S. Postal Service facilities across the island, court records show.
Ramon Gantier Jr. stands accused of taking $73,279.46 in bank deposits from post offices in Kingshill, Gallows Bay, Frederiksted and Sunny Isles during a five-month span ending in March 2025. The charges include four counts each of stealing government money, taking Postal Service property, and unlawfully possessing stolen mail.
According to the indictment filed in District Court on October 27, the largest single incident allegedly occurred on March 17, 2025, when Gantier took $34,535 from the Kingshill facility. Three prior thefts are also detailed: $15,825 from Gallows Bay on December 4, 2024; $12,864.46 from Frederiksted on November 8, 2024; and $10,055 from Sunny Isles on October 24, 2024.
The charges invoke three federal statutes governing theft of government property, theft from the Postal Service and unlawful possession of mail. The indictment does not disclose how Gantier obtained access to the deposits, whether he worked for the Postal Service, or how authorities connected him to the incidents.
Federal prosecutors initially sought to keep the indictment sealed before it was unsealed Thursday following Gantier's arrest. U.S. Magistrate Judge G. Alan Teague ordered his release on a $25,000 unsecured bond and assigned a public defender to his case. Gantier is presumed innocent unless convicted.
