A fatal crash on St. Croix early Saturday has left one person dead and another fighting for life after two vehicles collided near Estate Castle Burke.

Jeralys M. Guzman, 22, was behind the wheel of a white Toyota RAV4 when it struck a black Acura at the intersection of Queen Mary Highway (Route 70) and East Airport Road (Route 64). Paramedics found her unresponsive and pronounced her dead at the scene; a family member later confirmed her identity.

The collision took place just before 4:55 a.m. on October 17. Police said the Acura was heading north on East Airport Road at the moment of impact, while Ms. Guzman's vehicle was moving east along Queen Mary Highway.

Ms. Guzman's front-seat passenger sustained critical injuries and was rushed to Juan F. Luis Hospital. Both occupants of the Acura also went to hospital, though their injuries were assessed as non-life-threatening.

Detectives from the Traffic Investigation Bureau arrived at the scene to begin their work. The cause of the collision has not been released, and police have not indicated whether either driver bore responsibility. The investigation is continuing.
