Pastor Claude O. Skelton-Cline has urged the government to invest in a one-million-dollar fuel storage facility for the BVI Electricity Corporation, framing the project as essential to protecting the territory's energy supply.
Speaking on his radio programme Honestly Speaking on October 13, Skelton-Cline raised the proposal while discussing pressures from rising food and fuel costs. He identified Pockwood Pond in Baughers Bay, Tortola, as a suitable location and suggested the government could finance the work with a couple of million dollars.
"I am calling upon this government to set aside a couple million dollars and build our own one million-dollar reserve fuel tank for BVIEC," Skelton-Cline said. "As a matter of fact, BVIEC needs to lead the charge."
The social commentator contended that both the financial resources and physical space exist to proceed. He noted that Pockwood Pond contains adequate land for construction and that the cost need not exceed a couple of million dollars.
Skelton-Cline positioned the fuel reserve within a wider strategy for food and fuel security. He expressed frustration with what he sees as insufficient action, pointing to reliance on agreements with other nations rather than domestic measures.
"We must not be satisfied with the lip service of a Memorandum of Understanding being signed with Santo Domingo, with the Dominican Republic, and or elsewhere," he said. "There must be some sense of urgency on behalf of the government of the day to move in securing food and fuel for the people, for the citizens of this country."
