Prime Minister Godwin Friday is scheduled to testify Tuesday morning in a high-profile constitutional trial that questions whether his dual Canadian and Saint Vincent and the Grenadines citizenship disqualifies him from holding office.

The case centres on Section 26(1)(a) of the Constitution, which addresses dual nationality and parliamentary eligibility. It stems from petitions filed by defeated candidates from the ruling ULP party following the November 2025 general elections, challenging the victories of NDP candidates in East Kingstown and the Northern Grenadines.

On Monday, the court heard evidence from Joel Goberman, a Canadian legal expert with over 40 years of experience, who testified via video link from Italy about the meaning and legal weight of the Canadian citizenship oath. Goberman explained the rules, responsibilities, and administrative procedures tied to Canadian citizenship.

Senior Counsel Anand Ramlogan, the Prime Minister's lead defence attorney, told the court that Goberman's evidence was significant because Canada is a Commonwealth member, and Commonwealth citizenship is required to run for election in Saint Vincent and the Grenadines. Ramlogan argued that the citizenship oath is symbolic and demonstrates commitment to a form of government aligned with the Commonwealth Caribbean.

Ramlogan noted that the Prime Minister has been open about his dual citizenship throughout his parliamentary career, and that the challenge was only raised after his election with an "overwhelming mandate" as Prime Minister.

When asked about the case, Prime Minister Friday told the court he was "confident about the case" and that proceedings were "proceeding pretty much as we expect." He also noted that Monday's hearing finished earlier than anticipated, giving him time to mark his 67th birthday.

The defence team includes Shirlan Barnwell, Zhinga Horne-Edwards, Samantha Robertson, and Gabrielle Myers. The petitioners are represented by Stuart Young, SC, and Kay Bacchus-Baptiste.
