Mark H. Vanterpool, head of the People's Leadership Movement, gave a $5,000 cheque to the Virgin Gorda Basketball Club on Saturday at the launch of the 2026 VG Summer Jam Basketball League.
Vanterpool, a businessman and former government minister, said the contribution demonstrates the PLM's backing for young athletes and sports across the British Virgin Islands. Club officials had told him they needed roughly $4,000 for a new public address system, which was put to use that evening.
Club President Trevor Stevens emphasized the financial pressures involved in running the competition. "As we prepare for this year's league, the club continues to incur significant expenses to ensure a safe, enjoyable, and professionally organized event," Stevens said. He added that gifts like the PLM's support help the club manage costs and keep the Summer Jam going for players and the wider community.
Vanterpool spoke about his personal ties to the sport in the territory. "I consider myself, in a way, the father of basketball in the BVI," he told those gathered. He also honoured his late friend Jeffery Caines, whose name the basketball arena carries, and expressed satisfaction that the game has flourished nearly five decades since he first became involved.
The PLM leader indicated he would soon visit Virgin Gorda again in a political role to engage with islanders before the General Elections. The party, which is newly formed, is expected to announce a full roster of candidates within weeks.
