Slinger Francisco, the calypsonian known worldwide as The Mighty Sparrow, has died at 91. His family announced that he passed away peacefully in New York, surrounded by loved ones, after a brief illness.

Born in Grand Roy, Grenada, Francisco relocated to Trinidad and Tobago at age one alongside his mother. During his childhood in Port-of-Spain, he sang in the choir of St. Patrick's Catholic Church, where he refined his vocal abilities. In the early 1950s, he entered the calypso tents of the city, initially performing as "Little Sparrow" before taking on the stage name that would define his legacy.

Francisco's career took off in 1956 with "Jean and Dinah," a composition that merged humour, melody, and social commentary to explore the impact of departing American military personnel following World War II. The track secured both the Calypso Monarch and Road March titles, transforming the musical landscape.

During the late 1950s through the 1970s, he became the dominant force in calypso. His recorded output spanned dozens of albums and hundreds of compositions, encompassing political and social themes such as "Capitalism Gone Mad" and "Federation," alongside humorous narrative songs including "Saltfish" and "Obeah Wedding."

His performances reached major international stages, among them Madison Square Garden in New York and the Royal Albert Hall in London. He secured the Calypso Monarch and Road March crowns multiple times throughout his career and received both the Chaconia Gold Medal from Trinidad and Tobago's government and the Order of Trinidad & Tobago.

His family described him as a devoted husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, life partner, and friend. Prior to his death, Francisco was baptized into the Seventh-day Adventist faith.
