A man has died and a woman suffered life-threatening injuries after a sport utility vehicle crashed and overturned on Bovoni Road in St. Thomas early Sunday morning, according to the Virgin Islands Police Department.

The 911 Emergency Call Center received a report at approximately 3:31 a.m. that a vehicle had overturned on Benburin Stephens Drive, commonly known as Bovoni Road, near Gasworks Gas Station. Officers found a white Subaru Forester resting on its left side at the gas station entrance with an unresponsive male still inside.

Police said the female driver lost control of the vehicle while traveling on Benburin Stephens Drive and collided head-on with a brick pillar at the gas station entrance, causing the SUV to overturn. Three people were in the vehicle at the time. The driver sustained moderate injuries, while a female passenger suffered life-threatening injuries. Both women had already been transported by ambulance to Roy Lester Schneider Hospital before officers arrived. The male occupant died at the scene.

The crash occurred during what police described as an exceptionally busy overnight period. The Virgin Islands Police Department reported four car crashes in total that night, with two being fatal and two involving overturned vehicles attributed to excessive speeding. Glen Dratte, the VIPD's director of communications, said the Traffic Bureau Investigation continues to remind drivers about the dangers of excessive speed on roadways.

The police department's preliminary investigation determined that the driver lost control before striking the pillar, though the formal release does not independently identify speed as the cause of this particular crash. The identity of the deceased man has not been released pending identification and notification of next of kin.

The Traffic Investigation Bureau is continuing to investigate the circumstances surrounding the collision. Anyone with information is asked to contact the bureau at 340-774-2211.
