Ricky Liburd, a Virgin Islands-linked redshirt sophomore wing, took the floor for Michigan in a preseason exhibition game against Houston on Sunday afternoon at Van Andel Arena in Grand Rapids, Michigan.

The Wolverines fell 81-64 to the Cougars in a physical contest marked by 50 combined fouls. Liburd, standing 6 feet 6 inches, spent much of the game defending Houston's perimeter attack and contesting fast-break opportunities, according to reporting on the game.

Liburd sat out last season as a redshirt while Michigan won the national championship, using the time to develop his two-way skills. Against Houston's notoriously suffocating defence, he was tested early and often, battling on the defensive glass and providing length on the perimeter.

Michigan's defence struggled throughout the afternoon. Houston's Mercy Miller led a sharp perimeter attack, while Jojo Tugler and Chase McCarty dominated inside. The Cougars built early double-digit leads and forced Michigan into foul trouble, particularly in the second half when Houston repeatedly attacked the rim.

Michigan's Roddy Gayle Jr. led the Wolverines with 14 points, supported by backcourt play from Elliot Cadeau. But defensive lapses and fouls proved costly as the game wore on.

Liburd, who played high school basketball at Sagemont Prep in Florida, has drawn praise from Michigan legend Tim McCormick as an emerging defensive disrupter. His frame, active hands and instincts are what head coach Mike Boynton's staff need as they reshape the perimeter rotation for the 2026-27 season.

Michigan opens the regular season on November 2 at home against Oakland at Crisler Center in Ann Arbor.
