The Jamaica Association of the USVI will host a special screening of "Stew Peas", a Jamaican psychological thriller, on November 1 at cinemas in both St. Croix and St. Thomas. Revenue from the event will support rebuilding efforts at basic schools in Jamaica that sustained damage when Hurricane Melissa struck the island a year ago this month.
Director and writer Sosiessia Nixon-Kelly created the R-rated film, which iKon Media produced. The story centres on detective Tessa Riley, who investigates a murder while managing personal crises at home. As the case develops, concealed truths jeopardise her progress.
The Jamaica Association described the event as bringing "a prominent piece of Jamaican cinema to the territory while rallying support for young students back home whose schools were severely impacted by the storm".
The November 1 programme begins at 5 p.m. with a meet-and-greet session, with the film starting at 6 p.m. Seating is limited, and tickets must be purchased in advance through Eventbrite only.
The film's Caribbean-wide launch occurs on October 31, with its Virgin Islands public release set for November 5.
The Jamaica Association of the USVI works to promote Jamaican culture, build ties within the regional diaspora, and fund educational, cultural and humanitarian projects serving St. Croix, St. Thomas and St. John.
