Police in Guyana have arrested a 20-year-old Venezuelan woman after she took a seven-month-old child from her parents' residence in Port Kaituma. The infant, Carlys Albert, was located safely at Hague Backdam in West Coast Demerara on the evening of Wednesday, October 28, and has been returned to her family in good condition.
The caregiver, who lived at the family home and was from Oronoque in Port Kaituma, was taken into custody when officers arrived at the location. She had been hired roughly a month earlier to care for the child's three daughters. The family later discovered she had given them a false name and was not well acquainted with them before being employed.
On the morning of the incident, the child's mother Maylet Rampersaud and her husband departed for work around 7:30 a.m. The caregiver then prepared the infant, packed belongings, and told the two older children she would deposit items elsewhere and return shortly with the baby. When hours passed without their return, the older girls alerted their parents, who immediately notified authorities.
Social media circulation of the missing child's photograph proved instrumental in the recovery. Police continue investigating how the child was transported from Port Kaituma to West Demerara. The woman remains in police custody pending further inquiries, and no formal charges have been laid to date.
Rampersaud reflected on the situation, saying "She was living at our home. I never suspected anything." The case has sparked discussion among residents about vetting childcare providers and safeguarding children.
