Restoration work at Great Mountain in Tortola has uncovered what officials believe may be the remains of a large fort or plantation, sparking a heritage investigation in the Fifth District.
Honourable Kye M. Rymer, the Fifth District Representative and Minister for Communications and Works, revealed the discovery during community dialogues on Sunday, October 11. The site was found while workers were restoring a natural spring that residents have traditionally used for washing clothes and vehicles.
Among the features uncovered are structures that Rymer described as possible jail cells. "We had some of the experts that came out, and they'll be doing some research there," Rymer told the gathering. He cautioned that the site's exact history remains unconfirmed, though it "might have been a plantation."
The discovery comes as part of a broader development project at Great Mountain. Alongside the heritage investigation, infrastructure work is underway to construct walls and roads, improve the parking lot, and enhance access to the spring and surrounding area.
Rymer said the findings could eventually position Great Mountain as a new tourist attraction for the community, potentially creating economic opportunities for local taxi drivers who could guide visitors to the site. He indicated that more details will be shared once experts complete their research and analysis of the site.
