Residents across Frederiksted Town were jolted awake in the predawn hours of Saturday when intense automatic gunfire tore through the western district shortly after 3:15 a.m.
Witnesses reported hearing between 20 and 30 rounds fired in rapid succession, with the shooting appearing to originate from streets surrounding Frederiksted Cemetery and nearby residential areas. The pattern of fire suggested multiple armed individuals engaged in an active exchange, with bursts of automatic weapons fire alternating with individual shots consistent with a moving pursuit or running confrontation.
By Saturday evening, the Virgin Islands Police Department had released no public alerts, press statements or official information about the incident. The absence of communication left residents without answers on key questions: whether buildings or vehicles sustained damage, whether shell casings were collected, or whether anyone sought treatment for gunshot wounds at Gov. Juan F. Luis Hospital overnight.
The shooting adds to a recent surge in gun violence across the territory. St. Croix experienced three fatal shootings earlier in October, followed by a predawn ambush on St. Thomas that killed an Ohio resident.
Community members have expressed frustration over the lack of timely safety information when gunfire erupts in populated neighbourhoods. Police urge anyone who observes armed individuals, hears gunfire, or discovers bullet impacts to contact 911, the VIPD Tip Line, or Crime Stoppers USVI at 1-800-222-8477.
