Grenada will hold a general election on 5 November, Prime Minister Dickon Mitchell announced on Sunday, calling voters to the polls almost a year ahead of the October 2027 constitutional deadline.
Mitchell, an attorney leading the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC) into a second consecutive election, made the announcement at a campaign and candidate launch in St Mark on the island's northwest coast. The nomination of candidates is set for 15 October, according to the official Government Gazette.
The NDC currently holds a 9-6 majority in Parliament's 15 seats. Mitchell told supporters he is confident of victory and noted that some backers have called for a clean sweep of all seats.
The party will face challenges from the main opposition New National Party (NNP), now led by Emmalin Pierre. Pierre took over the leadership in 2024 after former prime minister and party founder Dr Keith Mitchell stepped down from active politics last week, ending 42 years as the parliamentary representative for St George's North West. Pierre will become the first woman to lead the NNP into a general election.
The Democratic People's Movement (DPM), launched in November 2025 by former foreign affairs minister Peter David, is also expected to contest the election.
Mitchell told supporters that the 15 NDC candidates have been presented and urged voters to continue backing the party to "take Grenada, Carriacou and Petite Martinique forward."
