Federal marshals have apprehended a St. Thomas man accused of involvement in a June homicide, authorities announced Tuesday.
Jah'Sheem Graham was taken into custody on Monday, September 28, in Orange County, Florida, by the U.S. Marshals Florida/Caribbean Regional Fugitive Task Force. The V.I. Police Department is seeking his extradition on a charge of aiding and abetting first-degree murder.
The arrest stems from the death of 23-year-old Asani Henry on June 16 in the Hospital Ground area of St. Thomas. Police received a 911 call at approximately 3:40 p.m. reporting gunfire. Officers found Henry unresponsive with multiple gunshot wounds and he was pronounced dead at the scene.
According to the U.S. Marshals Service, Graham departed the territory on June 18, two days after the killing. On September 23, the V.I. Police Department formally requested the federal task force's help in locating him. Investigators determined he was likely in the Orlando area, and five days later, federal agents and Orange County Sheriff's deputies found him outside an apartment building. He was arrested without resistance.
Graham is currently held in Florida pending his transfer back to the territory. The Marshals Service has not announced when that transfer will occur or what proceedings may be required in Florida first.
Henry's death occurred during an exceptionally violent period for the islands. On the same day, 55-year-old Fitzroy W. Wattley was shot and killed in Sanchez Town on St. Thomas, and 20-year-old Amani Daley was found shot near Profit Hills on St. Croix. The three deaths brought the year's homicide toll to 20 at that point.
