Prime Minister Dr. Terrance Drew took part in a national thanksgiving service on October 25 in St. Kitts and Nevis to celebrate his recovery from a stroke that struck in late August.
Thousands gathered for the event, which ran for more than four hours under the banner "Praise On The Green: A Nation Gives Thanks". The programme included worship, clergy prayers and gospel music, with government officials and citizens joining to welcome the Prime Minister back.
In remarks to the crowd, PM Drew disclosed the cause of his illness for the first time in detail: a tear in his left vertebral artery resulting from a neck massage. He confirmed he remained conscious throughout the incident and noted that his blood pressure, cholesterol and general health had stayed strong despite his demanding schedule.
He credited medical teams at Joseph N. France General Hospital and facilities abroad with guiding his recovery. PM Drew also stressed that God, rather than he himself, had prompted the service.
Much of his address centred on spiritual reflection. During his illness, PM Drew said, God posed two questions to him: whether he had sought God in his life, and whether his earthly intentions were sound. He recounted seeing a vision of the world in flames yet bound to heaven, which he interpreted as proof that God has not turned away from humanity and that hope endures.
He called on citizens to maintain their prayers and pursuit of God while holding fast to righteous intentions, and pledged to continue serving as Prime Minister.
Church leaders and cabinet members joined him on stage following his remarks for an anointing prayer that included blessings for his leadership. The gathering closed with a final prayer for the nation.
PM Drew had confirmed in September that he suffered the stroke in late August and had been released from a Florida hospital to recuperate.
