Dominica's Thea LaFond has secured election to the World Athletics Athletes' Commission for the 2025, 2029 term, the Government Information Service announced.

LaFond, a triple jumper who won silver at the World Athletics Championships in Tokyo, received 1,293 votes from competing athletes. She was one of six members elected or re-elected to represent athletes within track and field's international governing body.

Since 2019, commission members have held full voting rights on the World Athletics Council, allowing LaFond to influence decisions affecting the sport globally.

The other newly elected members are Andreas Almgren of Sweden, Lia Apostolovski of Slovenia, Lisanne de Witte of the Netherlands, Anna Ryzhykova of Ukraine, and Gia Trevisan of Italy. They will work alongside returning members including Dame Valerie Adams of New Zealand and Renaud Lavillenie of France.

Athletes participated in the election at a rate exceeding 95 per cent. Dame Valerie Adams, who chairs the Athletes' Commission, praised the widespread participation from the global athletics community.
