Guyana Police Force arrested a constable from its Command Centre after he admitted selling surveillance footage to Opposition Leader Azruddin Mohamed for $800,000, according to police statements.

The officer downloaded the CCTV material on October 23 while on duty and later told detectives he had spent part of the money, police said. The arrest came hours after Mohamed held a press conference on October 26 where he displayed what he described as uncut footage of a shooting incident that occurred on October 12 outside the Kitty home of Special Branch head Senior Superintendent Prem Narine.

At the conference, Mohamed said the video showed Narine emerging from a vehicle and firing shots. He accused the police force of providing false accounts of the incident and stated the Government of Guyana had given incorrect information to the United States Department of Justice. Mohamed announced he would pursue private prosecution charges against Narine by mid-November.

According to police, Narine was at his Barr Street residence shortly before midnight on October 12 when a vehicle passed by. Narine reported hearing shots, taking shelter and firing back. Officers later stopped the vehicle on Vlissengen Road and Sandy Babb Street, recovering a.32 caliber pistol with no serial number and three bullets.

Mohamed, his son Mario Mohamed and Eugene Thorne were charged with unlawful possession of firearms and ammunition and attempting to pervert the course of justice. All three received bail of $750,000. Mohamed rejected the police allegations, saying he was recording the police activity at Narine's residence.

Narine is currently testifying in extradition proceedings involving Azruddin Mohamed and his father Nazar Mohamed, both sought by the United States on fraud and money laundering charges. Police indicated investigations into the CCTV matter and recovery of the cash from the constable are continuing.
