Charlotte Amalie has secured the 25th position in Travel and Tour World's ranking of top shopping destinations across the Americas and Caribbean for 2026, making it the second-highest Caribbean city on the list.
San Juan, Puerto Rico led Caribbean entries at 22nd place. The remaining Caribbean cities in the top 30 were Philipsburg in Sint Maarten (26th), Nassau in the Bahamas (27th), Oranjestad in Aruba (28th), Bridgetown in Barbados (29th), and Santo Domingo in the Dominican Republic (30th). New York City held the overall top position.
Travel and Tour World cited Charlotte Amalie's blend of historic downtown areas, jewellery retailers, duty-free shops, artisan goods and waterfront commerce as key strengths. The publication identified Main Street, the Waterfront, Havensight Mall and Crown Bay as major shopping hubs, noting that visitors seek fine jewellery, timepieces, fragrances, cosmetics, designer goods, handcrafted items and regional souvenirs.
The assessment used a 100-point framework covering ten dimensions: shopping variety, local retail culture, upscale brands, value for money, signature shopping zones, distinctive experiences, ease of access and facilities, appeal to travellers, and commitment to community and environmental responsibility. The methodology incorporated data from tourism authorities, retail studies, travel guides, industry research and publicly accessible sources.
The US Virgin Islands Department of Tourism noted that the ranking validates Charlotte Amalie's longstanding position in the regional tourism economy. Tourism Commissioner Jennifer Matarangas-King stated that the recognition was "a wonderful reflection of the distinctive experiences that await visitors in St. Thomas," adding that the capital's retail sector enables guests "an opportunity to take a meaningful piece of the Virgin Islands home with them."
The department emphasized Main Street as the territory's premier luxury shopping corridor, especially for jewellery and watches, while also showcasing independent galleries, specialty shops, casual wear retailers and locally manufactured goods. Travel and Tour World separately recognized Charlotte Amalie, Cartagena and Santo Domingo in a dedicated category for "Jewellery and Distinctive Local Products."
