The BVI Ports Authority is launching its first Portvision Conference this week, drawing maritime professionals, government officials, business leaders and port users to discuss the future direction of seaport operations across the territory.
The gathering takes place Thursday and Friday at Maria's by the Sea. Organisers have chosen the title "Innovation and Sustainability in Seaport Operations" to frame discussions on how cargo efficiency, cybersecurity, physical security, cruise tourism, customer service, trade, maritime insurance, sustainability and climate resilience intersect within the maritime sector.
Jurine Scatliffe George, Business Development Manager at the BVIPA, explained the conference's purpose: to move industry insights into actionable planning for the BVI's maritime role in the Caribbean. "Ports are central to island economies: they support the movement of goods, enable tourism and trade, connect local businesses to regional and international markets and create employment throughout the maritime value chain," Scatliffe George said.
A priority for the authority is strengthening ties between regional ports. The conference will explore how technology investment, workforce development, strategic partnerships and climate preparedness can deepen the maritime sector's economic impact.
Thursday's agenda emphasises innovation, technology, security, tourism and customer experience. Friday shifts focus to trade, business, climate resilience, sustainability and longer-term strategy. Both days feature keynote presentations, roundtable discussions and informal networking.
